The mission of Headwaters Dance Co. is to develop and showcase thought-provoking, contemporary, socially relevant dance, by a variety of choreographers, and to increase audience appreciation for this kind of dance.

Based near the Continental Divide in Missoula, Montana, Headwaters Dance Co. is a professional, modern dance company that showcases smart, theatrically oriented, contemporary works, created by choreographers from all over the country. Reflecting its location near the source springs of North America, Headwaters imports high-caliber, contemporary dance from the coasts to inland regions, and exports the best contemporary work of the Northern Rockies to the coasts and beyond.

Founded in 2004 by Artistic Director Amy Ragsdale, Headwaters grew out of The Montana Transport Dance Co. (Mo-Trans), which she co-founded. After 11 years with Mo-Trans Ms. Ragsdale decided to break away on her own. While Mo-Trans concluded its final season as a professional, modern dance, touring company Headwaters opened its doors. Headwaters Dance Co. replaces Mo-Trans as the only professional, touring, modern dance company in the state of Montana.

Headwaters continues Mo-Trans’s commitment to stimulating evening performances and educational outreach.
